Now that Pantone has released the colour of the year for the year 2025, we can take a look at where the trends in Interior Design are likely to head in the year ahead.
The colour of the year for 2025 - Mocha Mousse - continues the warming trend we have been seeing in colour for the last few years, but also represents a point of departure, ushering in a new beginning. In contrast to the light and airy colour of the year in 2024 - Peach Fuzz - that suggested an air of innocence and delicacy, the colour for the upcoming year is a lot more grounded, deep and earthy.
The new colour of the year, seems to signify our desire and need to get our hands muddy and plant new seeds of intention. It seems like we are going back to basics and foundational colours that can have a longer staying power than just a single trend cycle.
We seem to be entering a brand new era, where courage, humility, community, and connection are more top of mind. These themes are also going to find their way into fashion and interior design themes. Therefore, in the upcoming year, the following colours will be more and more used in Interior Design.
The world of hardwood flooring, as a microcosm of the Interior Design world, is also affected by these colour trends. Over the past few years, we have been seeing a shift from the cool, grey colours, first by moving towards natural floors that look almost unfinished, to a warmer, lighter tone in the greige colour category. This was also in line with the colour of the year being a light and airy colour, suggesting a more whimsical base to the designs in interiors.
Red Oak Brownstone from Vintage Flooring is the perfect Mocha Mousse colour and adds the additional benefit of having a wirebrushed texture, which is also in line with the textured essence of Mocha Mousse.
White Oak Bauhaus from Vintage Flooring is a deep mocha colour with a less visible grain pattern, which makes it an ideal representation of the smooth feel of Mocha Mousse.
Mercier Wood Floors has been the leader in this trend with an entire collection in the different shades of Mocha Mousse in the Source Collection, The three colours of Balance, Comfort, and Synergy are all cooler tone browns, available in White Oak, Red Oak and Ash.
Red Oak Savanna, a classic colour from Mirage Floors, is poised to make a triumphant comeback under this new colour trend, as the perfect blend of coolness and warmth in a classic and unassuming brown floor.
For those with a more modern design sensibility, Mirage Floors presents White Oak Hattie, from Muse Collection. This engineered hardwood provides a bit more variation and depth of colour, playing on the differing textures of Mocha Mousse.
Urbanwood from Craft also presents us with the timelessly elegant Ridgewood, a warm, inviting, and yet unassuming Mocha colour on wide plank White Oak engineered floors. This choice is both understated and glamorous while providing the perfect neutral backdrop to any design palette you choose to put on top of it.
Kentwood Floors give us the bold Townline colours on Hickory in a wide plank engineered format. This bold floor choice is not just an example of bold usage of the Mocha colour but it is also not for the faint of the heart with the high variations found naturally in hickory boards.
