Pantone has chosen the colour Mocha mousse for 2025. This warm medium shade of brown seems to suggest a longing for “harmony and comfort”, bringing to mind notes of chocolate and coffee, evoking a feeling of warmth and pleasure. The overwhelming desire for harmony seems to be echoing through the minds of everyone around the globe, in almost every industry.

In contrast to the soft, tender and delicate colour of 2024 in Peach Fuzz, which represented “warmth and a welcoming embrace expressing a heartfelt kindness” the colour of the year for 2025 seems to be more rugged, grounded, and carry more depth. Gone is the sweetness and the innocence of the fragile, airy, barely there but impossibly soft touch of Peach Fuzz and we seem to have a deeper need to connect with Mother Earth and to ourselves.

As the consumer base becomes more and more conscious in their choices, the seek to surround themselves with organic products, materials, and colours help them feel more deeply connected to the environment and each other. To that end, Mocha Mousse honours and embraces the sustenance of our physical environment, which also promotes balance, nourishes our soul, and positively impacts our mental well-being.

To prove the versatility of the colour of the year, Pantone has also presented us with a few colour palettes. As expected some of the palettes are of warmer and softer colours.

Relaxed Elegance palette, is a warm neutral palette that takes inspiration from the desert sands and warmth of earth and earthly tones. It is probably the most expected colour palette from this colour.

The Uniquely Balanced palette, shows us how this colour can be mixed with bright cool tones, albeit in moderation and by keeping the cool tones bright and in small doses, we still get a warm and inviting colour tone. While these colour palettes are comfortable, unassuming, and timeless, they do tend more towards the warm end of the colour spectrum and they may be too far ahead of the trends in Interior Design at the moment.

Alternatively, the Floral Pathways and subtle contrasts palettes really share the versatility of the colour of the year, as it is paired seamlessly with the cooler end of the colour spectrum. Even though the colour of the year is on the warmer end of the colour spectrum, it provides a neutral and cooperative container for the cooler colours that are used in conjunction with it, demonstrating that this warm shade is in no way limiting or limited in its application.

In the upcoming year, it will be interesting to see how the colour of the year will influence interior design and products that will be featured. In the coming months, we will focus on the impacts of the colour of the year on Interior Design and flooring products specifically.
